Soyam Lokendrajit : About the Author

Soyam Lokendrajit passed High School Leaving Certificate Examination in 1964 from Ram Lai Paul High School then affiliated to Board of Secondary Education, Assam. In 1968 he graduated with Honours in Philosophy from Dhana Manjuri College then affiliated with Gauhati University. He got his Master's degree in Philosophy from the Centre of Advanced Studies in Philosophy, Visva Bharati, Santiniketan in 1970.

He started his teaching career as a Lecturer in Manipuri and a part-time Lecturer in Philosophy in Cachar College from 1971. He was recruited as a Lecturer in philosophy by Manipur Public Service Commission in the year 1973, served D.M College from 1973 up to 1991. He did his doctoral research under the UGC Faculty Improvement Programme at the University of Calcutta from 1977 up to 1981.

He worked with Dr. Sachindra Nath Ganguly and Professor Rama Prasad Das on the problem of freedom and necessity in human action. Calcutta University awarded him Ph.D degree in 1983. His published books are - The Problem Of Freedom And Necessity In Human Action (1987), Knowledge And Justification (1991), Philosophical Reflections (1997), Why AFSPA Should Be Repealed (2004), Apomba Manglan (a collection of poems in Manipuri, 1979). He has published more than sixty papers in nationals and internationals academic journals. He has presented papers at national and international seminars and chaired sessions.

At present, Professor Soyam's researches are on issues of freedom, democracy, development and right to self-determination. His interest in comparative religion is an extension of this research. A faculty member of Manipur University since 1986, Professor Soyam is presently Head, Department of Philosophy, Manipur University.
